“We think we listen, but very rarely do we listen with real understanding, true empathy. Yet listening, of this very special kind, is one of the most potent forces for change that I know."

– CARL ROGERS

Why is Motivational Interviewing so Effective?

  • It is different.  MI is an alternative to the usual approach of educating patients/clients/students and trying to persuade them to change.  Advising people to change is often if not always ineffective.

  • It is respectful.  The spirit or attitude of people who practice MI is key.  We honour and respect a person’s choice and autonomy acting as guides to help them discover their own reasons and needs to make a change.

  • It is brief.  Several studies have shown that practicing MI with patients/clients actually saves time.  Sometimes a single session can be enough to motivate behavioural change outcomes.

  • It can be learned.  You can become versed in MI through interactive training and on-going coaching by a skilled trainer.  Like any new skill of course, learning MI takes practice and time.

Who would benefit from taking Motivational Interviewing?

MI has been studied and implemented in hundreds of environments.  It appears to have no boundaries in its ability to help people make positive and healthy changes in their lives.  Anyone who is wanting to help someone make a behaviour change will find MI applicable to their work.

If you work in health care, social work, social services, psychotherapy, occupational therapy, education, health promotion, counselling, smoking cessation, coaching, or criminal justice, you will benefit from learning MI.

Many professionals take MI including:  case managers, primary healthcare providers, addiction specialists, doctors, nurses, social workers, probation officers, coaches, dieticians, supervisors, personal trainers, veterinarians, physical therapists, dental hygienists, and weight loss specialists.

What are the benefits of MI for you and your clients/patients?

  • Leads to less burnout and frustration.  Giving the control back to your clients can help practitioners feel less responsible for your clients changing.

  • Adaptable approach.  Learn to combine your current approach with an MI style and techniques.

Learn how to work with ‘resistant’ clients.  Develop effective techniques to use with clients/patients who are resistant to change.

  • Help clients/patients become unstuck and improve their lives by building their own motivation for lasting positive behaviour changes.

“Motivational interviewing is a collaborative conversation style for strengthening a person’s own motivation and commitment to change.”

― WILLIAM R. MILLER, Co-Founder of Motivational Interviewing
